Welcome to the Elemans Lab at the University of Southern Denmark. We study the control mechanisms that vocal vertebrates use to produce sound for communication. We focus on several model systems, such as songbirds, bats, and toadfish. We discovered that many of these vertebrates have evolved a class of the fastest vertebrate muscles known, so-called superfast muscles, to either produce or control their vocalisations. We also study the comparative physiology and evolution of these extreme performing vertebrate muscles.
